We are a historic winemaking company with 835 hectares of land
straddling the boundary between the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli
Senesi areas.

Our vineyards include 17 hectares in the Chianti Classico
district, 41 hectares in the Chianti Colli Senesi area, and 30 hectares planted
with grapes for IGT Toscana wines.

The estate is managed by a team of
professionals with well-established winemaking experience.

A dynamic
enterprise with solid human foundations.

History

A property desired by the most prominent families of Siena, Poggio Bonelli has had a number of different owners over the centuries: owned by the historic Spennali family during the Middle Ages, it passed into the hands of the illustrious Piccolomini family in the second half of the sixteenth century. Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the estate was owned by the Landucci family, most likely through inheritance.

The Croci and Landucci families joined forces to bring Poggio Bonelli into the twentieth century, then sold it to MPS Tenimenti, an estate owned by Banca
Monte Dei Paschi, the well-known bank based in Siena.

Climate

The area enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, profoundly influenced by Mount Amiata, which channels the breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea so that they prevent moisture from accumulating and promote optimal temperature excursions.

The vineyards

Located on the southern edge of the Chianti Classico district, at an altitude of
250 to 370 metres. The vines are cordon spur and guyot trained, with an average density of about 5500 vines per hectare.

The wine cellar

Built by the Chigi family in the mid-eighteenth century, the wine cellar has
been preserved over the centuries. The winemaking process takes place in a
building that was originally used to store grain.

Terroir

The soils in this area, consisting of sea sand and a particular type of river terrace, in combination with the Mediterranean climate and major temperature excursions, produce complex, long-lived wines with a strong local character.
